Rodney Black. (Becker County Jail)
Detroit Lakes, MN – An Arizona man was arrested at the 59er Diner and Motel for threatening his significant other with a firearm while they were camping.
On Monday, 56-year-old Rodney Steven Black of Apache Junction, AZ made his first court appearance and was charged with Threats of Violence and Domestic Assault following an incident at the Buffalo Lake Campground over the weekend.
Prosecutors say Becker County deputies initially responded to a report of assault at the campsite. The victim told officials that she and Black had a fight that turned physical. She said that during the altercation, Black began reaching around the bed where he kept a handgun and said, “How would you like to die tonight?” Deputies did find a handgun case near the bed, but did not find a firearm.
Investigators reached out to Black, who confirmed that there had been an argument. He denied hitting the victim and said he didn’t have any knowledge of a firearm at the camper.
Officers left the area and a short time later they received a call from dispatch indicating the victim did find the firearm. The firearm was identified as a Ruger SR9 and had a loaded magazine.
Officers located Black at the 59er north of Detroit Lakes and arrested him. While in custody, Black admitted that the firearm was his and said that he didn’t tell deputies the truth because he thought “everything was over and done and he was just going to leave.” Black acknowledged he had a felony conviction in Arizona but believes he can legally possess a firearm.
