Ponsford, MN – A Ponsford woman faces multiple charges for grabbing the steering wheel of a moving vehicle, crashing into the ditch, then later assaulting police.
Becker County Prosecutors say at around 8:15 p.m. Tuesday, 37-year-old Ashley Jennifer Stevens and her boyfriend were in an argument while he was driving on County Highway 35, when she grabbed the wheel and turned it towards the south ditch. Officers say the vehicle crashed into a group of trees about 75 yards away from the road. Stevens’ boyfriend told officers that Stevens was intoxicated at the time of the crash.
A White Earth Police Officer located Stevens down the road, walking away from the accident. According to the officer, Stevens said, “I tried to get away without cops noticing, obviously I got caught.” Stevens refused a preliminary breath test and was taken into custody.
According to court documents, during transport and while at the jail, Stevens resisted officers, banging her head into the door cage of a squad car, urinating on her hands and wiping it on a deputy, and kicking multiple officers while being restrained.
Stevens made her first court appearance on Thursday and has been charged with felony domestic assault, 2nd degree DWI, and multiple counts of assaulting a peace officer.
