Perham, MN – A Perham man has been sentenced for injuring a woman when he drove into her apartment building over two years ago.
On Monday, 33-year-old Courtney Tyler Hayes was sentenced to ten days in jail and four years on probation for causing substantial bodily harm by negligently operating a vehicle. Hayes was originally charged with and pleaded guilty to the felony version of the crime but was sentenced at the misdemeanor level.
Prosecutors say that on November 16, 2023, Hayes crashed into a mailbox, went into a ditch, hit the apartment driveway, and crashed into the apartment building. Investigators estimate the car was going well over the posted speed limit at the point of take-off. Medical records for the victim, who was sitting by the wall in her apartment at the time of the crash, reflect that she sustained a buckle fracture in two of her ribs, and sprained ligaments in her ankles.
Court documents say Hayes admitted to a state trooper that he was texting while driving and that doing so caused the crash, but investigators found no outgoing texts on his phone at that time.
