Lady Spartans Head Basketball Coach Steve Schreiber. (M State)
Fergus Falls, MN – Minnesota State Community and Technical College (M State) has named Steve Schreiber as head coach of the Lady Spartans women’s basketball program.
Bringing nearly two decades of coaching experience and a proven track record of building successful programs, Schreiber has earned a reputation for developing individual players, fostering strong team cultures, and cultivating meaningful relationships with student-athletes and their communities. The founder of North Central Wild Elite AAU, he has also established several summer camps and clinics and serves on the Miss Basketball selection committee. He joins M State after leading girls basketball programs in Brandon-Evansville, Bemidji and Menahga.
“We are excited to have Steve take the helm of our women’s basketball program,” says Jason Retzlaff, co-athletic director at M State. “He has had extensive success coaching girls basketball for many years, and his teams are always well prepared and play hard. His passion for the game of basketball is evident and makes him a great fit to lead our program and recruit top athletes to the Lady Spartans.”
For Schreiber, the opportunity represents the realization of a long-held goal. “When I first got into coaching, my goal was to coach at the college level,” Schreiber says. “Over the years, I found fulfillment coaching high school athletes – it was fun and rewarding for me – but when this opportunity came along, it felt like the right fit at the right time.” Schreiber and his family have lived in Fergus Falls for the past two and a half years, giving him familiarity with both the community and the M State campus.
“What stands out to me about M State is the close-knit environment,” he says. “I tell my players that I’m here to help them become better basketball players, and I do that by helping them become better people, better students and better teammates. A small, supportive campus community makes it easier to build those relationships and help students grow in all areas of their lives.”
That people-first approach has guided Schreiber throughout his coaching career. He works with players to establish individual and team goals while creating development plans designed to help each athlete reach her full potential, on and off the court.
As he begins his tenure at M State, he looks forward to building a team culture centered on relationships, accountability and growth. “I want our team to be a family,” he says. “My goal is to help student-athletes become stronger in the classroom, stronger in life and stronger on the court. When you put those things together, that’s how you build a successful basketball program.”
Schreiber has a bachelor’s degree in science and physical education from Bemidji State University and a master’s degree in athletic administration from Concordia University.
