Fergus Falls, MN – On Tuesday morning, Lake Region Healthcare unveiled Threads of Hope, an art piece created to honor the ways suicide touches individuals, families, friends, and communities.
Each thread represents an anonymous story, experience, or reflection share by community members through an anonymous survey. Lyndi Hudson, Office and Patient Coordinator at Senior Life Solutions and artist of Threads of Hope, said the threads are woven together as a symbol of connection, remembrance, hope, and support.
The 94 dark blue strands at the bottom of the piece represent survey respondents that said that they themselves or someone they know have experienced thoughts of suicide. The 58 light blue rings running up the center represent respondents that said they are a survivor of a suicide attempt. The 71 strands of string hanging on the sides of the piece represent individuals lost to suicide reported by the survey respondents. The threads strung between the center and the sides represent the voices not yet heard.
As part of the unveiling, Hudson had attendees help finish the piece by adding silver and gold paint to the strings running down the center to represent those who support those struggling with suicidal thoughts.

Hudson hopes that this art piece is done again in the future. She said, “The frame is adaptable. We can use it again and again, and we can make different designs depending on how we set it up. So I hope this is something that runs in the future as well, and that it inspires others to give our community awareness a try, especially through art, because it’s one of the easiest ways that we can connect with others.”
Threads of Hope was created in honor of Suicide Awareness Month. The art installation will be on display in the lobby of the Fergus Falls Clinic for the month of September.
