Fergus Falls, MN – Over the weekend, reports of a card skimmer being found at the Fergus Falls Walmart spread across social media, but the report has been determined to be a false alarm.
The rumor spread after a police scanning app picked up a report on Sunday morning that a Walmart employee noticed something suspicious while they were working the night before, and believed there might be a skimmer on one of the card readers. A card skimmer is a secret, illegal device placed on a card reader to steal the credit or debit card information of anyone who attempts to use it.
According to the Fergus Falls Police Department, the suspicious pad was at one of the self-checkout registers on the grocery side and had duplicate “9” keys. Officers checked with staff and confirmed that it was the original pad.
To protect yourself from skimming, the FBI website recommends inspecting ATMs, Point of Sale (POS) terminals, and other card readers before using them. Look for anything loose, crooked, damaged, or scratched. Don’t use any card reader if you notice anything unusual.
