St. Paul, MN (Learfield) – Minnesota State is redirecting up to $25 million annually for four years to help financially struggling colleges and universities.

The Board of Trustees approved the plan, which will shift money from other institutions in the system, primarily two-year colleges. Officials say the funding is a temporary measure as Minnesota State works to address a $31.5 million structural deficit.

Meanwhile, enrollment across the Minnesota State system of 33 colleges and universities remained stable overall for the start of the 2026-2027 academic year.

Enrollment data show that the students learning for credit are now at 172,879 students. That’s up 535 students from fall 2025. Growth at Minnesota State colleges offset enrollment declines at some universities which resulted in a plus-535 students for the entire system.

Minnesota State serves more than 270,000 students annually through credit and non-credit programs and is the state’s largest provider of higher education.
