Breckenridge, MN – The Wilkin County Board of Commissioners is considering a proposal to repeal the shotgun-only restriction for deer hunting in Wilkin County.
The State Shotgun Zone will be repealed as of January 1, 2026. This allows counties to adopt ordinances that restrict certain firearms during the deer hunting season, instead of the state. Currently, hunters in Wilkin County are required to use shotguns during the regular firearms deer season.
The County Board is seeking public input on the proposal, inviting all interested parties to share their thoughts and opinions on the potential repeal of the shotgun-only restriction.
Wilkin County Administrator Stephanie Sandbakken will be accepting written comments that are sent to the County Administrator’s office by mail or email (ssandbakken@wilkincounty.gov) by December 1, 2025. Residents are also encouraged to attend a public input session on December 2 at 9 a.m. at the County Board of Commissioners Conference Room.
