Fergus Falls Celebrates 100 Years of George B. Wright Statue

Fergus Falls, MN – On Thursday, July 16, the City of Fergus Falls and the Otter Tail County Historical Society held a celebration for the 100^th anniversary of the George B. Wright statue off Union Avenue.

Former Historical Society Director Chris Schuelke led the program, as he and a handful of performers recounted the history of George B. Wright and the creation of his statue.

George B. Wright was a contracted government surveyor who in 1870, built a sawmill and started work on a dam to harness the Otter Tail River for hydropower. He then began promoting Fergus Falls, calling it “The Coming City.” In 1925, over 40 years after his death, his son Vernon commissioned Minneapolis sculptor Harriet Hanley to make a statue in honor of George’s legacy.
