Erhard, MN – A Pelican Rapids woman is dead following a head-on collision with a suspected drunk driver near Erhard late Sunday afternoon.
State troopers say that at around 4:50 p.m. Sunday, a Volkswagen Passat was heading north on U.S. Highway 59, and a Buick Regal was heading south when the two vehicles collided.
The driver of the Buick, 51-year-old Basro Hassan Abokar of Pelican Rapids, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Volkswagen, 25-year-old Jacob Thatcher of Fergus Falls, was taken to Lake Region Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
The road was wet at the time of the accident. Troopers say Thatcher is suspected to have been under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash, though no charges have been filed.
The State Patrol was assisted by the Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office, the Pelican Rapids and Fergus Falls Police Departments, Ringdahl and Pelican Rapids Ambulances, and the Pelican Rapids Fire Department.
