Fergus Falls, MN – Multiple organizations participated in the Day of Purple campaign on Thursday, showing support for victims and survivors of domestic violence.

The Day of Purple is an annual campaign put on by Someplace Safe to raise awareness for domestic violence. Purple is the color used throughout October to commemorate Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Ashley Zach from Someplace Safe says that domestic violence affects people in every community, and the need for support is real. In the past year alone, Someplace Safe served 1,670 survivors of domestic violence. Domestic violence doesn’t always look the way we might expect. Abuse can include physical violence, but it can also involve emotional abuse, threats, intimidation, isolation, sexual abuse, financial control, and other behaviors used to maintain power and control.

Ashley says Someplace Safe is a great resource for those working through situations involving domestic violence. “And it’s not always just legal help or getting them emergency housing,” Ashley said. “Sometimes it’s just a shoulder to lean on, someone to talk to. Having someone believe them and listen to them is such an important way that folks can feel heard about what’s happening to them.”

If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence, you can call the Someplace Safe 24-hour Crisis Hotline at 800-974-3359.
